18 July 1918 : Nelson Mandela was born in South Africa.
1942 : Qualified in Law.
1944 : He joined the African National Congress.
1948 : He was engaged in resistance against the ruling
National Party's apartheid policies.
1955 : He went on trial for treason.
1961 : He Acquitted.
1962 : He was arrested and sentenced to five years' imprisonment with hard labour.
12 June 1964 : He and 6 people were sentenced to life imprisonment.
1964-1982 : He was incarcerated at Robben Island Prison, off Cape Town.
11 Feb 1990 : He was released from the prsion.
1991 : Mandela was elected President of the ANC.
